Solar

Is a solar battery worth it in 2026?

Batteries have come a long way, but they are not automatically worth it for every home. Here is how to tell whether one stacks up for you.

Is a solar battery worth it in 2026?

A solar battery stores the power your panels make during the day so you can use it at night, instead of exporting it cheaply and buying it back at full price after dark. It is a genuinely good idea for the right home. The question is whether your home is one of them.

A battery makes most sense when...

  • You already have solar (or are installing it) and export a lot of unused daytime power
  • Your household is out during the day and uses most of its power in the evening
  • You want backup through blackouts, not just savings
  • You are on a high usage tariff where avoided grid power is worth more

How blackout backup actually works

This is the part most people misunderstand. A standard grid-connected solar system shuts off in a blackout for safety, even in daylight, so panels alone do not keep your lights on.

A battery with backup capability can island your home and keep essential circuits running. But not every battery or install includes whole-home backup, and the size of the battery decides how long it lasts. If backup matters to you, say so up front so the system is designed for it.

What to expect from the warranty

Quality battery units are typically covered by a 10 to 15 year warranty, usually with a guaranteed minimum capacity retained at end of term. Treat a much shorter warranty as a warning sign. The inverter and install workmanship should be warranted too.

The honest take

If you export a lot of solar and use power in the evening, a battery can pay for itself over its life while adding backup and independence. If your usage is already mostly during the day, your panels are doing the heavy lifting and a battery is more about resilience than pure payback. We will tell you which camp you are in rather than sell you a box you do not need.

Common questions

Can I add a battery to my existing solar?

Usually yes. Many systems are "battery-ready" or can be retrofitted with a hybrid inverter. We check your existing setup and tell you what is involved before you commit.

How long does a battery last in a blackout?

It depends on the battery size and what you are running. Backing up essentials (fridge, lights, internet, a few power points) stretches much further than trying to run the whole house including air-conditioning.
