//Overview

Your switchboard is the heart of your home’s electrical system. It takes the incoming supply and splits it across the circuits that run your lights, power points and appliances, and it’s meant to cut the power the moment a fault occurs. Older boards can’t always do that, which is where an upgrade comes in.

Why an old fuse box is a risk

A board built around ceramic fuses was designed for a much smaller load than a modern home puts through it, and it predates the safety switches now considered standard. Many boards on asbestos backing panels are still in service in Hunter homes built before the mid-1980s. That’s a genuine safety risk: ageing wiring and a tired supply are a leading source of electrical faults in older homes, and an outdated board can create problems with home insurance if a fault is ever traced back to it.

Signs you need a switchboard upgrade

Book a safety check
Old ceramic fuses

A rewireable "fuse wire" board instead of modern circuit breakers.

No safety switches

The biggest safety gap in an older board: no RCD protection on your circuits.

Power keeps tripping

Fuses blow or breakers trip when a few appliances run at once.

Renovating or extending

A new kitchen, air-con or granny flat adds more load than the old board was built for.

Adding solar, battery or EV

A very common trigger: these change the load and often need an upgraded board first.

Burning smell or scorch marks

Buzzing, a warm board or scorching. Stop using it and call an electrician.

Preparing a rental for lease, an overcrowded board with no room to add circuits, or an asbestos backing panel are all common triggers too. Ticked even one? A professional assessment is the safe next step.

//The most common trigger

Upgrading your switchboard for solar, battery or EV charging

Adding solar, a home battery or an EV charger changes the load on your board, and current standards often require an upgraded, RCD-protected board before or as part of the install. If your installer has said the board needs doing first, that’s why.

It’s also where being a full-service business matters: we can upgrade your board and install the solar, battery or charger it’s for, one local team, done once, compliant from day one, rather than juggling two trades and hoping they line up.

//How it works

What’s involved in a switchboard upgrade

Most upgrades are a business-hours job. Your power will be off for part of the day while we swap the board over, and we’ll tell you what to expect before we start.

01
Assess

We check the existing board, wiring and your current and future load.

02
Quote

You get an upfront price and scope before any work begins.

03
Isolate

We shut the power off safely at the main switch and remove the old board.

04
Install

The new board goes in with circuit breakers and RCD safety switches across your circuits.

05
Test

Every circuit is tested to confirm it works and is properly protected.

06
Certify

We finish with your Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.

Upgrade vs full replacement

Sometimes a partial upgrade is enough: adding safety switches and modernising part of the board. In other cases a full replacement is the right call, usually when the board is very old, undersized, damaged or on an asbestos backing. We’ll tell you honestly which one your home needs, and why.

Meter box upgrades

The meter box is often upgraded at the same time, particularly on older homes. Work that touches the meter or the incoming service may fall under Level 2 / metering scope. We’ll confirm exactly what your job needs when we quote it.

Safety switches, RCD installation and electrical safety

A safety switch (RCD) monitors the electricity flowing through your circuits and cuts the power within milliseconds if it detects a fault, such as current leaking to earth through a person. A working RCD typically disconnects the supply in under 300 milliseconds, fast enough to prevent a fatal shock.

It’s different from a circuit breaker: breakers protect your wiring from overload, while RCDs protect people. A safe home needs both, so every compliant upgrade includes RCD safety switches across your circuits as standard.

Your certificate of compliance

When the work is finished, we provide a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW), the document that confirms the installation is safe and meets the wiring rules.

It matters for more than peace of mind. A compliance certificate is the record that the work was done to standard, which is important for your home insurance and useful if you ever sell. Every upgrade we do is licensed and certified.

What a switchboard upgrade costs in Newcastle

Every board is different, so the honest answer is that it depends. Rather than quote a figure that won’t match your home, here’s what actually drives the cost, and we quote every upgrade properly after assessing your board, so there are no surprises.

  • The number of circuits and the size of the board
  • The condition and age of the existing board and wiring
  • The meter box condition and whether metering work is involved
  • Single-phase vs three-phase supply
  • An asbestos backing board that needs safe removal
  • Whether it’s part of a solar, battery or EV installation

Switchboard upgrade FAQs

Still not sure?

Talk to a licensed local electrician, no obligation, straight answers.

How do I know if I need a switchboard upgrade?

The common signs are ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers, no safety switches, power that keeps tripping, or being told you need an upgrade to add solar or an EV charger. If any of these apply, it’s worth a professional assessment or an electrical safety check.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take, and will my power be off?

Most upgrades are a business-hours job, with the power off for part of the day while we swap the board over. We’ll give you a clear timeframe when we quote.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard to install solar, a battery or an EV charger?

Often, yes. These add load to your board, and current standards frequently require an upgraded, RCD-protected board first. We can assess this and handle both the board and the installation.

What’s the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker?

A safety switch (RCD) protects people by cutting power in milliseconds when it detects a fault. A circuit breaker protects your wiring from overload. A safe home needs both, which is why RCD safety switches are part of every compliant upgrade.

Will I get a compliance certificate?

Yes. Every upgrade includes a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work, confirming the job is safe and meets the wiring rules.

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?

It depends on your board size, its condition, your supply type and whether any meter or asbestos work is involved. We quote every job properly rather than guessing. Request a free quote and we’ll assess it.
